The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra Plays Monk

Thelonious Monk’s music is a playful, profound, and universally loved jazz canon that brings together musicians of all backgrounds and ages. As part of this season’s annual Monk Festival, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will debut new Monk arrangements written by members of the JLCO and by some of jazz’s most promising young musicians, including Joe Block and Matt Wong, who both won Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Composition/Arrangement competition when they were in high school. This performance is a chance to hear the JLCO’s top composers and the next generation’s brightest minds reinterpret the music of Monk for a band that can play anything.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and the National Symphony Orchestra of Romania

The National Symphony Orchestra of Romania, conducted by Cristian Măcelaru, joins forces with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis as part of its first-ever United States tour. The JLCO and NSOR will perform the world premiere of Wynton Marsalis’ newly completed work, The Jungle. Commissioned in 2017 for the 175th Anniversary of the New York Philharmonic, an early version of The Jungle was performed to sold-out crowds for five nights straight. Marsalis will now present the final version of this extraordinary suite in Rose Theater.

Pianist McCoy Tyner and saxophonist Charles McPherson are both true living legends, each of them 80 years old, and they’re here to prove that jazz keeps you young. Tonight they join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis to play brand-new big band arrangements of their iconic compositions—all written exclusively for this concert by members of the JLCO. The Orchestra members are longtime fans of these jazz giants, and the excitement will be palpable as they share the stage to perform inspired new versions of their favorite songs.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis closes the season with a new collaboration bridging visual art and jazz composition. In partnership with Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, JLCO members have selected individual pieces of art to serve as inspiration for new compositions. These new songs will be premiered alongside large projections of the artwork that inspired them, turning Rose Theater into a unique musical art gallery.
