New York, NY—February 10, 2016 —Jazz at Lincoln Center presents the world premiere of Spaces by Wynton Marsalis on Friday & Saturday, April 1 & 2, 2016 at 8:00pm in Rose Theater, Frederick P. Rose Hall (60th and Broadway). A series of compositions written for dancers and appropriate for all ages in spirit and years, Spaces will attempt to recapture the natural fascination we have with the sounds and movements of animals.

Approximately 90-minutes in length, Spaces is being written for and performed by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Spaces will also feature two extraordinary dance geniuses who will convey how essential movement is to jazz, and how it reflects a natural expression of life itself: Charles “Lil Buck” Riley, a groundbreaking young artist who specializes in a style of street dance called jookin’; and Jared Grimes, a tap dancer who won the 2014 Fred Astaire Award. Damian Woetzel will serve as choreographic consultant for Spaces. A celebrated producer and director of dance and music performances, Woetzel will work with both dancers on the overall structure and choreography for Spaces, seamlessly integrating it with Marsalis’ musical compositions.

Mr. Marsalis specifically invited Lil Buck and Grimes to perform in Spaces because he considers them to be “the latest inheritors of the long tradition of dancers,” picking up where other greats such as William Henry Lane, a.k.a. Master Juba; Bill “Bojangles” Robinson; and Sammy Davis Jr. left off, and who are as relevant to the art form as other present-day masters such as Savion Glover.”

Tickets for Spaces by Wynton Marsalis can be purchased through jazz.org 24 hours a day or via CenterCharge at 212-721-6500, open daily from 10am to 9pm. Tickets can also be purchased at the Jazz at Lincoln Center Box Office, located on Broadway at 60th Street, ground floor. Box Office hours:  Monday-Saturday from 10am to 6pm (or 30 minutes past curtain) and Sunday from noon to 6pm (or 30 minutes past curtain). 

Note: Hot Seats, $10 seats for select performances in Rose Theater are available for purchase to the general public on the Wednesday prior to each performance. Subject to availability. Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Hot Seats Ticket Discount Program is supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
