December 2013 Lineup Announced

New York, NY (October 31, 2013) – This December, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola features a full lineup of performances, including holiday shows by the Ted Rosenthal Trio, vocalists Michael Mwenso, Brianna Thomas and Charenee Wade, as well as Duduka da Fonseca & Helio Alves. Several artists make their Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola debut, including Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Jazz Sextet, the Bria Skonberg Quartet, and the Kate Davis Trio. Bobby Watson and Horizon take residence to celebrate three decades of music.

Last but not least, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola ends the year on a high note with an unprecedented residency by the legendary Wynton Marsalis Septet from December 26 – 31, including two special performances on New Year’s Eve. The Music of Duke, Dizzy, and the Dorseys

For the second year in a row, Wycliffe Gordon has been voted “Best Trombone” in the Annual Downbeat Critics Poll. He returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to play the music of Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Tommy Dorsey, and Jimmy Dorsey.

MONDAY  NIGHTS WITH WBGO hosted by Rhonda Hamilton*
Gabriel Alegria Afro-Peruvian Jazz Sextet

One of the most influential figures on the current jazz scene in Perú, Gabriel Alegria brings the Afro-Peruvian Jazz Sextet to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, combining jazz as it developed in the U.S. with the black music of coastal Perú.

Pianist Ted Rosenthal celebrates the release of Wonderland, a new CD of holiday music. He is joined by Noriko Ueda on bass and Tim Horner on drums.

Hot jazz trumpeter and vocalist Bria Skonberg, recently included in Downbeat's 61st Annual Critics Poll as a "Rising Star" on trumpet, makes her Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola debut in a double bill with the 2013 "Rising Star" in the  Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition Kate Davis and her trio.

Anat Cohen Quartet

The Israeli-born, New York-based clarinetist and saxophonist, who The Washington Post calls "one of the brightest, most original young instrumentalists in jazz”, leads a jamming quartet featuring Jason Lindner on piano, Joe Martin on bass, and Daniel Freedman on drums.

Monday, December 9 
New York Youth Symphony's Jazz Band

The 17-member brass-wind-and-percussion ensemble presents a centennial tribute to Woody Herman with tunes including Woodchopper's Ball, Early Autumn, and Four Brothers. Trombonist John Fedchock joins the band at this concert.

Yosvany Terry and the  New School West African Heritage Ensemble

Yosvany Terry leads this ensemble of New School Jazz students which will explore the rich musical heritage of West Africa and the West African diaspora in the Americas. The repertoire includes traditional music from the diaspora as well as original compositions by contemporary composers.

The Wynton Marsalis Septet features the best of the best, with each legendary member a true leader on his instrument. Led by nine-time GRAMMY® Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Wynton Marsalis, the group’s repertoire includes originals from Marsalis and his band mates, as well as a diverse selection of favorites from throughout jazz history. 

Featuring: Marsalis, trumpet; Wessell "Warmdaddy" Anderson, alto saxophone; Wycliffe Gordon, trombone; Victor Goines, clarinet; Eric Reed, piano; Reginald Veal, bass; and Herlin Riley, drums.
