The Appel Room

Herlin Riley Presents: Sounds of Cuba and New Orleans

What To Expect

  • An energetic performance featuring classic New Orleans repertoire reimagined and spiced up to include Cuban music traditions
  • Free pre-concert discussion about the music and artists at 6pm and 8:30pm

Due to an unforeseen health issue, we regret to inform you that Herlin Riley will not be able to perform in Sounds of Cuba and New Orleans on February 21–22. We appreciate your support while he recuperates and works his way back to full health, and we look forward to hosting him in future performances. To perform the show in his stead, Riley has invited his great protégé Joe Dyson on drums and longtime friend and fellow New Orleanian, Nicholas Payton, to serve as music director.

Tonight’s concert will continue Riley’s exploration of the ways in which Latin jazz intersects with the sounds of his hometown, showcasing classic New Orleans repertoire reimagined and spiced up to include Cuban music traditions. Riley has hand picked a group of extraordinary artists for this evening concert including New Orleans drummer Joe Dyson, Cuban percussion genius Pedrito Martinez, prolific trumpeter (and fellow New Orleanian) Nicholas Payton, New York's lively, go-to bassist Russell Hall, and special guests Yusa on vocals, Oscar Rossignoli on piano, and spoken word artists Chuck Perkins and Indio Melendez.

Be a part of it when Cuba meets New Orleans in The Appel Room.
