Opera Lafayette: Opera and the French Revolution

With the French Revolution raging in the streets, how did the artistic milieu of Paris react? Opera Lafayette explores opera performed during the Revolution with the Greek tragedies of Sapho, Medée, and Œdipe à Colone.
This fully-staged program includes three dramatic scenes from classical Greek tragedies set by Martini, Cherubini and Sacchini. These operas held the stage for multiple performances in the 1790’s and reflect the tumultuous times of the French Revolution. The production, with full orchestra and chorus, features the young Czech director Mirenka Cechova and lighting by Martin Spetlik.
