Wynton Marsalis' Blues Symphony & Beyond

American Composers Orchestra

With George Manahan, Music Director & Conductor & Uri Caine, piano

American Composers Orchestra presents jazzmaster Wynton Marsalis’ recently-completed Blues Symphony. One of his only pieces composed for purely orchestral forces, this celebration of the blues is heard through the prism of moments in American and African-American history and folklore. The world premiere of Sanctum by Courtney Bryan, a New Orleans-based composer, pianist, organist, and band-leader, and alumna of ACO’s Jazz Composers Orchestra Institute, explores improvisation in Holiness-preaching traditions. Known for his jazz permutations of the music of classical composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, and Bach, Uri Caine turns the tables on himself in Double Trouble, a combination of fixed musical forms, freedom and spontaneity, with the orchestra functioning as a ‘sort of’ rhythm section inviting improvisation from the soloist.

Please note that Wynton Marsalis will not be performing at this concert.
