Celebrating Clifford Brown

An All-Star Bebop Tribute

What To Expect

  • Swinging, instrumental bop at its finest.
  • Classic jazz standards.

His time with us was short, but his lasting impact on the trumpet and jazz history is legendary.

Trumpeter Clifford Brown, who passed at age 25, helped create some of the most stirring and enduring bebop and hard bop of all time, working alongside pioneers like Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, Sarah Vaughan, and Art Blakey. Throughout his brief but eventful career, Brown contributed a series of standards to the jazz songbook, including “Daahoud” “Joy Spring,” and “Sandu,” while taking existing standards like “Cherokee,” Take the A Train,” “Night in Tunisia,” and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” to exciting new places.

For tonight’s celebration of what would have been Brown’s 90th birthday, trumpet master and founding Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra member Sean Jones has assembled an elite lineup of musicians to pay tribute to the icon. Backed by a rhythm section comprised of living legends Kenny Barron on piano, Ben Williams on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums, the show’s frontline is a multigenerational all-star cast of trumpeters, including Jones, Randy Brecker, Michael Rodriguez, Ambrose Akinmusire, Giveton Gelin, Summer Camargo, and Ingrid Jensen, with special guest Melissa Aldana joining on saxophone.

This exclusive new show at Jazz at Lincoln Center promises swinging, instrumental bop at its finest, played by musicians who care deeply about the occasion and the musical gifts of the great Clifford Brown.
