SFJAZZ Collective Plays the Music of Joni Mitchell

Featuring Lizz Wright

What To Expect

  • SFJAZZ Collective’s first performance at Jazz at Lincoln Center in more than a decade.
  • Innovative new takes on classic Joni Mitchell songs, plus brand-new pieces inspired by her music.

The SFJAZZ Collective—called “contemporary jazz’s premier all-star band” in 2019 by the New York Times—returns to Jazz at Lincoln Center for the first time in more than a decade.

The current edition of the ever-evolving SFJAZZ Collective features saxophonist and artistic director Chris Potter, tenor saxophonist David Sánchez, trumpeter and percussionist Etienne Charles, bassist and vocalist Aneesa Strings, vibraphonist Warren Wolf, pianist Edward Simon, and drummer Obed Calvaire. It’s a true supergroup, featuring several recent Jazz at Lincoln Center headliners.

Each season, the Collective presents newly commissioned works by band members and fresh arrangements of music by a single modern master. For this season, the chosen master is iconic singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell. Between the strong jazz influences in her striking compositions and her deep working relationships with jazz royalty—writing for Charles Mingus and recording with artists like Wayne Shorter, Jaco Pastorius, and Herbie Hancock—Mitchell has firmly established herself as an important part of the modern jazz canon. Alongside vocalist Lizz Wright, the group will perform innovative new takes on some of Mitchell’s classic songs in addition to brand-new pieces inspired by her music and unique legacy.

Don’t miss this touring project from our West Coast friends while they’re here for two nights only in New York City!
