The Appel Room

The Many Sides of Bird

A Charlie Parker Centennial Celebration

What to expect

  • Jazz musicians and dancers pay tribute to Charlie Parker, the saxophone legend and pioneer of bebop.
  • Daring solo, duo, and trio performances combining improvisation and movement.

The Appel Room concert season kicks off with a multidisciplinary celebration of Charlie Parker, the iconic saxophonist and bebop pioneer who helped usher in a new era of jazz virtuosity. Throughout the show, audiences will enjoy a series of solo, duo, and trio performances by a diverse and regularly expanding array of musicians and dancers.

Master vocalist Sheila Jordan—a personal friend of Parker’s, whom he called “the singer with the million dollar ears”—will be joined by pianist Alan Broadbent and bassist Harvie S. Saxophonist and Charlie Parker scholar Steve Coleman will perform with members of his Five Elements band and jook dancer Myles Yachts. Hard bop pianist and former member of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Benny Green, will play alongside saxophonist Joel Frahm, one of New York’s most prolific musicians. Genre-bending artist Brandee Younger will showcase her creativity on the harp, and a soon-to-be-announced saxophone choir will make a special appearance.

These artists are just the beginning, with additional surprise guest musicians and tap, ballet, and modern dancers soon to be added.

This program is quickly becoming a one-of-a-kind concert event, so join us in celebration of the Charlie Parker centennial, and discover the timeless music of “Bird” in a contemporary new light.
