Eliane Elias

The Music of Jobim and Freedom in Brazil

What To Expect

  • A reflection on the multiple meanings of freedom by Brazilian pianist and vocalist Eliane Elias, one of the modern jazz and Latin jazz greats.
  • Reimagined songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim and a collection of music composed by Brazilian musicians exiled from Brazil during its years of dictatorship.

Eliane Elias is a multi-Grammy Award–winning pianist, singer, composer, and internationally top-selling recording artist. Born in Brazil and based in New York City, Elias is instantly recognizable both for her smoky, relaxed vocal style and her sophisticated, harmonically advanced approach to the piano. What sets her apart even further is her rare, dual mastery of Brazilian music traditions, straight-ahead jazz, and the many fusions in between.

Elias’ Rose Theater performances will be split into two halves, each offering a different take on the concept of “freedom.” One half of the concert is something Elias calls Variations on a Theme of Jobim—in which she and her band “will take melodic motifs from some of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s most well-known songs, express musical freedom within the song forms and structures, and arrive at surprising, yet recognizable destinations through improvisation.”

The other half of the evening will reflect on “freedom” of a different, particularly personal nature, as Elias performs a collection of music written by composers who were exiled from Brazil during its years of dictatorship. Selections include “Samba de Orly,” from Elias’ Grammy Award–winning Dance of Time, featuring lyrics written by Vinicius de Moraes during his political exile; and “Song of Exile” (aka “Sabiá”), written by Jobim and Chico Buarque, who used their music as a means to achieve their own freedom of personal and political expression.

For two nights in Rose Theater, experience one of the modern greats as she helps Jazz at Lincoln Center continue a season-long exploration and celebration of freedom.
