Rose Theater 2020-2021

Mose Allison & The Blues

with Special Guest Taj Mahal

What to expect

  • Iconic multi-instrumentalist/singer Taj Mahal, vocalist/guitarist Richard Julian, and bandleader/pianist Richard Chin, plus special guests.
  • A tribute to influential singer, pianist, bluesman, and musical storyteller Mose Allison.

NEA Jazz Master Mose Allison was a pianist, singer, and sharp musical storyteller known for his incisive lyrics and unique blend of jazz and Delta blues. Though widely respected in pure jazz and blues crowds, Allison’s wry songwriting was also immensely influential to decades of rock and folk artists, and his songs have been recorded by The Yardbirds, John Mayall, The Clash, The Kinks, Diana Krall, Paul Butterfield, Bobbie Gentry, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Rait, and others.

This performance is part of an ongoing tribute project co-led by vocalist/guitarist Richard Julian, whom NPR calls “a true soul singer and an astonishing storyteller in the vein of Randy Newman or Paul Simon;” and bandleader John Chin, a versatile and inventive pianist who works with many of the best jazz artists in town. Together they approach Allison’s music with great respect to the songcraft and attitude of the original music without attempting to imitate it, giving audiences a thoughtful and contemporary take on the profound, yet broadly enjoyable source material.

Joining their quintet for these Rose Theater concerts is legendary vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Taj Mahal, whose expansive “world blues” vision incorporates influences from New Orleans, the Caribbean, Africa, and more. Mose’s daughter, Amy Allison, will serve as host, adding a personal touch to the evening. Additional band members and special guests will be announced closer to the performance.
