The Music of Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, and Charlie Haden

Performed by the JLCO with Wynton Marsalis

What to expect

  • Ted Nash directs an evening of music by three of the 20th century’s most brilliant and idiosyncratic visionaries: Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, and Charlie Handen.
  • Big-band renditions of classic repertoire that combine masterful composition with collective improvisation.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis performs music by three original geniuses of jazz: Charles Mingus, Ornette Coleman, and Charlie Haden. With their brilliantly unconventional approaches to composition, improvisation, and band-leading, each of these giants of jazz helped usher in a profound new era of musical freedom.

Multi-Grammy Award–winning composer, arranger, saxophonist, and bandleader Ted Nash will serve as music director for the evening, utilizing the JLCO’s incomparable stylistic and dynamic range to reimagine their compositions in big-band form.

Rewriting the rules of jazz to fit their own bold idiosyncrasies, each of these groundbreaking visionaries mixed spirited group improvisation—one of the earliest staples of the jazz tradition—with deeply soulful, modern, and consistently surprising songwriting that still hits hard upon first listen. And though they predictably ruffled feathers as some of the most stubbornly authentic and uncompromising artists of their time, they stayed true to their craft and are now universally hailed as three of the 20th century’s top visionaries.

Following the example upheld by these jazz titans, the JLCO proudly arranges each of its charts to emphasize the unique abilities and musical personalities of each long-time member of the band. Audiences tonight will discover a one-of-a-kind sonic journey made possible only by this singular group of musicians building upon the rich foundations dreamed up by Ornette Coleman, Charles Mingus, and Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra.
