The JLCO with Wynton Marsalis plays Charlie Parker

Celebrating 100 Years

What To Expect

  • A thrilling and energetic tribute to the iconic pioneer of bebop.
  • A centennial celebration featuring Charlie Parker’s best-known pieces transformed into virtuosic big band charts.

Join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis for a centennial celebration of the great Charlie Parker. Under the music direction of Wynton Marsalis, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and special guest saxophonists Patrick Bartley, Immanuel Wilkins, and Zoe Obadia will pay a fitting tribute to the iconic pioneer of bebop.

Known for his improvisational genius, breakneck speed, and game-changing harmonic ideas, Parker left us with a whole new brand of jazz that, to this day, remains a thrilling feat to perform. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra has transformed many of his best-known pieces into virtuosic big band charts, each of them featuring extended solo sections for the band’s improvisers to let loose.

By today’s standards, Parker’s music is upbeat and catchy, but it’s also a reminder of an era of fierce competition between musicians, with soloists pushing themselves to their limits to impress audiences and prove themselves to bandleaders. This spirit of showy competition has grown much more playful and friendly over the years, but Parker’s music still inspires musicians to make their bandmates’ jaws drop when it’s their turn to shine.

Don’t miss the fireworks in this season opener!
