Swing U: George Gershwin

Porgy and Bess: Class 2

From the moment Porgy and Bess premiered in 1935, it was showered with both praise and criticism from almost every angle. Nevertheless, decades later the work remains an integral part of the world’s musical memory. Tonight, we listen to music from the original production, including rare rehearsal recordings, and we sample what great Jazz artists—from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, to Ray Charles and Betty Carter, to Miles Davis, and to Nina Simone—have done with Gershwin’s masterpiece.
