Jazz at Lincoln Center's 2019-20 concert season is all about inspiring figures and big ideas. Anchored by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, the season is packed with world premieres and classic masterpieces.

Cécile McLorin Salvant


Ogresse—a new musical journey created by vocalist Cécile McLorin Salvant—is a delightfully audacious addition to Salvant’s increasingly eclectic body of work. Joining Salvant to bring this dark and romantic fairy tale-like story to life is a 13-piece chamber ensemble led by Darcy James Argue with the MIVOS string quartet.

Family Concert: Who is Chick Corea?

Learn all about pianist, composer, and living legend Chick Corea in a fun family show that will entertain and inspire you—whether you’re already jazz lovers or new to the scene. This hour-long program will feature live performances of Chick’s game-changing music and tell the inspiring story of a lifelong dreamer who has remained one of the most popular figures in music. Featuring trumpeter, form Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra member, and host Sean Jones as well as young pianists Sean Mason, Micah Thomas, and Tyler Henderson.

Joe Lovano Universal Jazz Ensemble

On top of being one of the world’s best saxophonists, tenor titan Joe Lovano is also one of the most restlessly creative leaders in music. His latest all-star group features seven artists from across the entire spectrum of jazz, each of them also a renowned composer, bandleader, and instrumentalist: pianist Kenny Werner, bassist John Patitucci, guitarist Liberty Ellman, drummers Andrew Cyrille and Tyshawn Sorey, trumpeter Graham Haynes, and vocalist Judi Silvano.

A Swingin’ Sesame Street Celebration: 50 Years and Counting

See some of your favorite feathered and furry friends sing classic Sesame Street songs alongside the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis in this swinging celebration of the show’s 50th anniversary.

With Jack DeJohnette, Vijay Iyer, and more

Join us as we celebrate 50 years of ECM Records, called "one of the defining sound-worlds of the past half-century of recorded music" by the New Yorker. While some of the artists performing tonight are no strangers to Jazz at Lincoln Center, this is a rare opportunity to hear them all on one stage as they pay tribute to a label that has contributed so uniquely and extensively to contemporary music. Featuring performances by Jack DeJohnette, Vijay Iyer, Meredith Monk, Bill Frisell, Ethan Iverson, Matthew Garrison, Ravi Coltrane, and more.

Chucho Valdés

With special guest Chick Corea

Multi-Grammy Award–winning pianist Chucho Valdés will play a broad spectrum of Cuban, Afro-Latin, and jazz styles. World-renowned for his solo performances, Valdés brings fleet-fingered, cross-cultural brilliance to every phrase. Pianist Chick Corea will join Valdés for the second half of the concert in the pair’s first-ever collaboration.

The Abyssinian Mass by Wynton Marsalis

Presented in Collaboration with Lincoln Center's White Light Festival

Wynton Marsalis’ epic The Abyssinian Mass comes to the House of Swing for an exclusive three-night run. Featuring the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and 70-piece gospel choir Chorale Le Chateau directed by Damien L. Sneed, The Abyssinian Mass is a sweeping blend of big band bravado, impassioned solos, hand claps, tambourine slaps, and some of the mightiest voices you’ll hear outside of church.

Adonis Rose & the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra

with René Marie and John Boutté

The Grammy Award–winning New Orleans Jazz Orchestra blends the stylistic versatility of a big band with a New Orleans-style emphasis on groove and accessibility. With an expansive repertoire of originals, jazz staples, New Orleans classics, and pop, rock, R&B, and soul hits, the NOJO is a band for all types of listeners, and an especially great entry-point for new fans of jazz. Joining them are vocalists René Marie and John Boutté.

Steve Miller

Cannonball Adderley and the Blues

Renowned blues-rock guitarist, multi-platinum-selling singer/songwriter, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Steve Miller continues his exploration of the blues at Jazz at Lincoln Center. This soul-stirring program features the Patrick Bartley Sextet and supreme vocalist Brianna Thomas in a spirited celebration of saxophone legend Cannonball Adderley.

Big Band Holidays

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis continues a beloved New York tradition that plays to sold-out audiences every December. Featuring guest vocalists Alexis Morrast and Denzal Sinclaire and soulful, big band versions of classics like “Jingle Bells” and “Joy to the World,” Big Band Holidays is an uplifting holiday program sure to get you into the spirit of the season.

Spiritual Sounds and The Jazz Age

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis revisits two of its most acclaimed originals: Victor GoinesUntamed Elegance, a thoroughly modern trip to the Jazz Age of the 1920s, and Chris Crenshaw’s God’s Trombones, inspired by a poetic take on traditional Black American church sermons. Each suite highlights the ensemble’s boundless creativity, commitment to artistic vision, and the peerless musical range of its individual members.

Transformation with Glenn Close and Ted Nash

Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis saxophonist Ted Nash is a visionary composer known for translating heady ideas into vibrant, relatable music. Tonight he presents the world premiere of his latest work, a new JLCO suite featuring award-winning actor and personal friend Glenn Close.

Herlin Riley Presents CUBANOLA

Sounds of Cuba and New Orleans

New Orleans drummer extraordinaire Herlin Riley explores the ways in which Latin jazz intersects with the sounds of his hometown. Featuring Cuban percussion genius Pedrito Martinez, prolific trumpeter (and fellow New Orleanian) Nicholas Payton, and New York's lively, go-to bassist Russell Hall, the event will showcase classic New Orleans repertoire reimagined and spiced up with Cuban music traditions.

Branford Marsalis Quartet

with Citizens of the Blues

The premise of tonight’s show is simple: one of jazz’s longest-running bands playing extraordinary music like no one else. The multi-Grammy Award–winning Branford Marsalis Quartet will play music from the brand-new record, The Secrets Between the Shadow and the Soul, with a bonus opening set by Citizens of the Blues, a quartet featuring some of the finest young musicians on the scene.

The Artistry Of Jazzmeia Horn

Love and Liberation

Jazzmeia Horn has confidently taken the jazz world by storm since winning the 2015 International Thelonious Monk Vocal Competition, and with her Love and Liberation tour, she truly comes into her own. In her Appel Room feature debut, the soulful and energetic Horn will perform songs from the album—her first collection of almost-entirely original material—with a first-class group of instrumentalists.

Family Concert: Who is Dave Brubeck?

Budding music enthusiasts and their families will learn about the life and art of the great jazz composer and pianist Dave Brubeck in this hour-long educational concert. Brubeck’s timeless music and principled leadership changed the world for the better, and this youth-oriented Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra concert is going to be a big, swinging celebration of an inspiring jazz ambassador.

One of the most exciting musicians to emerge in the 21st century, trumpeter and composer Ambrose Akinmusire creates distinctive and transportive original music. From Mingus to Monk

Can a great composition be compared to the work of a great architect? The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis invites you to experience some of the most masterfully structured pieces in the jazz canon, including works by Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and George Russell, plus the world premiere of Andy Farber’s Usonian Structures, a new suite inspired by architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

Mary Stallings and Freddy Cole with the Emmet Cohen Trio

Two extraordinary vocalists—each of them already a popular Jazz at Lincoln Center headliner—share The Appel Room stage in this Singers Over Manhattan showcase. Audiences will enjoy one of the most famous views in New York City while Mary Stallings and Freddy Cole sing their hearts out alongside pianist Emmet Cohen’s trio, featuring Russell Hall and Kyle Poole.

Sherman Irby's Supernova

Featuring the JLCO with Wynton Marsalis

JLCO saxophonist Sherman Irby leads a gravity-defying exploration of the universe with the world premiere of his new commission. After kicking off the suite with the Big Bang, the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis will travel through a series of distinctive movements, evoking awe-inspiring galactic phenomena from supernovas, stars, and black holes to the formation of a galaxy and life itself.

Art Blakey: The Legacy Continues

The Art Blakey Festival kicks off with a reunion of elite alumni from Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, led by Ralph Peterson—the only drummer ever to play in the band alongside the drum maestro himself. Joining Peterson are saxophonists Bill Pierce and Bobby Watson, trumpeter Brian Lynch, pianist Geoffrey Keezer, and bassist Essiet Essiet.

Art Blakey at 100

In honor of Art Blakey’s centennial, Wynton Marsalis will celebrate his iconic jazz mentor with a handpicked group of young, up-and-coming jazz musicians. Marsalis will highlight the sound that kept Blakey’s Jazz Messengers vital and popular for so many years while also showcasing the next generation of musicians who will carry the art form forward.

Joey DeFrancesco, Chris Potter, and Jeff “Tain” Watts

Witness the world premiere of a new all-star trio assembled exclusively for this Jazz at Lincoln Center performance: Joey DeFrancesco on the B-3 Hammond organ, tenor titan Chris Potter on saxophone, and Jeff “Tain” Watts holding it down on drums. Each musician will contribute brand-new music and revisit some old favorites for the occasion.

Just in time for Caribbean Heritage Month, Trinidad & Tobago’s world-famous Carnival celebration comes to The Appel Room courtesy of trumpeter, percussionist, and composer Etienne Charles. This high-energy spectacle seamlessly blends American jazz traditions with the thrilling sights and sounds of Trinidadian Carnival.

Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook

10 Years of Jazz & Popular Song

Singer, entertainer, and “Ambassador of the Great American Songbook” Michael Feinstein celebrates 10 years of his Jazz & Popular Song series with an all-star extravaganza. Capping off a historic run in The Appel Room, Feinstein now takes the show to Rose Theater for a grand reunion of the crème-de-la-crème.

Ellington Masterpieces

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis closes the concert season with an audience favorite: an all-Ellington evening of musical masterpieces. Over the course of six decades, Duke Ellington wrote well over 1,000 compositions, some of the richest and most enduring music of the past century. This music is a premier showcase of a big band’s range, nuance, and cohesion, and nobody plays it quite like the JLCO.
