Monday Nights with WBGO: Emilio Solla Tango Jazz Orchestra

With music director and pianist Emilio Solla; reedists Alejandro Aviles, Todd Bashore, Tim Armacost, Jon Irabagon, and Terry Goss; trumpeters Alex Norris, Jim Seeley, John Bailey, and David Neves; trombonists Noah Bless, Mike Fahie, Chris Blackwell, and James Rodgers; bandoneónist Julien Labro, bassist Pablo Aslan, drummer Ferenc Nemeth, and vocalist Roxana Amed.

“Proficient in the classical, jazz, and Argentinean folk traditions, Solla has reached an artistic level where his mastery of performance practice and creativity mesh into a single vision of the musical act, be it improvisational or composed.” – All About Jazz

Multi-talented pianist Emilio Solla is a prolific composer and bandleader, also well known as an orchestrator and arranger for acclaimed artists like Paquito D’Rivera and Arturo O’Farrill.

Solla’s brand new 17-piece big band beautifully highlights his inventiveness as a composer, bringing together a progressive group of musicians well-versed in both jazz and tango traditions–and with the maturity to blend them with grace. The lineup is a “who’s who” of contemporary jazz and some of its neighboring sub-genres, but you’ve never heard them sound like this before. Make sure to catch Emilio Solla’s return to Jazz at Lincoln Center, one of his “favorite spots on earth.”
