Toshiko Akiyoshi Trio

Lessons from Our Masters

With pianist Toshiko Akiyoshi, bassist Steve Whipple, and drummer Tim Horner

“...a level of compositional and orchestral ingenuity…in the company of Duke Ellington, Eddie Sauter, and Gil Evans."
- Stuart Nicholson, author of The Essential Jazz Records

The Lessons from Our Masters series features a master of jazz alongside a multigenerational band. Tonight’s master is NEA Jazz Master and multi-Grammy Award winner Toshiko Akiyoshi. Akiyoshi is a brilliant pianist, bandleader, and composer known for her challenging and full-textured arrangements that sometimes evoke her homeland, Japan. It’s an honor to have such a genuinely groundbreaking artist here for a night at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. For both the band and the audience, this performance will be a lesson from a true master.

This event is part of our 8th annual Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival, showcasing some of the top rising stars of jazz alongside some of the artists who have contributed to making this art form what it is today. The Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival runs from September 1–October 1, 2017. View the full line-up here.
