Ryan Keberle’s Big Band Living Legacy Project Celebrates Gerry Mulligan

Big Band Mondays

With music director and trombonist Ryan Keberle; alto saxophonists Steve Wilson and Dave Pietro; tenor saxophonists Dan Block and Scott Robinson; baritone saxophonist Carl Maraghi; trumpeters Earl Gardner, Bob Millikan, Chris Rogers, and Mike Rodriguez; trombonists Keith O’Quinn, Ryan Keberle, and Earl McIntyre; pianist Ted Rosenthal; bassist Peter Washington; and drummer Kenny Washington

Still in his mid-30s, Ryan Keberle is already an astoundingly versatile musician. He’s worked closely with a variety of artists including Wynton Marsalis, Maria Schneider, Alicia Keys, Beyoncé, and Sufjan Stevens—not to mention performing with the Saturday Night Live band, in Broadway orchestras, and on film soundtracks. Keberle’s Big Band Living Legacy Project celebrates and carries on the musical heritage of big band jazz, featuring original members of classic big bands led by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, and Benny Goodman. Tonight’s program is a celebration of Gerry Mulligan, a vastly influential saxophonist and composer who would have turned 90 this year. In just the first five years of his career, Mulligan arranged and played with Miles Davis on Birth of the Cool, arranged for Stan Kenton, and formed an important piano-less quartet with Chet Baker. This timeless repertoire, and much more, will be brought to life tonight through Ryan Keberle’s clever arrangements, passionate leadership, and expert big band.

This event is part of our 8th annual Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival, showcasing some of the top rising stars of jazz alongside some of the artists who have contributed to making this art form what it is today. The Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival runs from September 1–October 1, 2017. View the full line-up here.
