Dizzy's Club

A Night in Havana with Axel Tosca

With pianist/keyboardist Axel Tosca; bassist Alex Smith, drummer Mark Whitfield, Jr., vibraphonist/percussionist Felipe Fournier, kanum (Turkish string instrument) player Tamer Pinarbasi, trumpeter Kali Rodriguez, alto and soprano saxophonist Godwin Louis, and vocalist Xiomara Laugart

Cuban-born, New York-based pianist and composer Axel Tosca makes his debut at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola. Described as “contemporary jazz with a global reach,” Tosca blends influences including folk, timba, Afro-Caribbean, and funk. Tonight, he will be leading a sextet or septet through a set focused on his original music. Check out his self-titled album for a taste of his compositions, but note that this set will be more of a raw, acoustic approach to his music. Tosca is a charismatic bandleader whose groups have great chemistry, and we’re interested to see how they approach this exciting material.
