Kush to Cool: A Tribute to Diz featuring Theo Croker and ELEW

With trumpeter Theo Croker, pianist ELEW, drummer Kassa Overall, bassist Eric Wheeler, reed player Anthony Ware, and percussionist Luisito Quintero

“There are good, great, and nice musical players, but then there are phenomenal instrumentalists such as Theo. I would place Theo in a class of musicians who will redirect the flow, change and alter the current of today’s New Jazz.” – Donald Byrd

Only 30 years old, Theo Croker is a trumpeter and composer who has thoroughly captivated audiences, critics, and fellow musicians alike. He plays with stars like Dee Dee Bridgewater, works in the bands of some of jazz’s hippest young artists, and leads acclaimed groups of his own.  As part of our Dizzy Gillespie Festival, Croker will perform a set entirely comprised of Gillespie tunes in a program he calls Kush to Cool. Croker is well-versed in authentic jazz traditions, but as he’s recently demonstrated in his original work, he also knows how to mix in some unexpected musical twists, exploring how seemingly simple rhythm section variations can change the fundamental feel of a song, and repositioning quick, spitfire melodies into hooks and foundations for improvisation. He’s here at 9:30pm each night this weekend – for one set only; for another take on Dizzy, consider also checking out the 7:30pm set led by Bruce Harris.

Arrive early on Friday, January 27 and Saturday, January 28 to participate in the Dizzy Gillespie Festival in the Ertegun Atrium beginning at 6pm. Enjoy live music by Jazz at Lincoln Center’s education programs, and experience tastings from Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and partners Lotus Scoop Ice Cream and Spoonbread (1/28 only).
