Salute to Orrin Keepnews

With saxophonists Jimmy Heath and Gary Bartz, drummers Akira Tana and Jack DeJohnette, pianists Larry Willis and Randy Weston, bassists Ray Drummond and Rufus Reid

Friends, family, and colleagues gather to celebrate the memory of the great record producer Orrin Keepnews, who died in 2015. A founder of Riverside, Milestone, and Landmark Records, Keepnews worked with Thelonious Monk, Cannonball Adderley, and numerous other jazz greats. The highly prestigious band onstage tonight features four of the many notable musicians produced by Keepnews: NEA Jazz Masters Jimmy Heath and Randy Weston, prolific bassist Ray Drummond, and the ever-versatile drummer Akira Tana. In any context, this would be an all-star band not to miss, and as a heartfelt salute to Orrin Keepnews it will be a particularly memorable occasion.

This event is part of the seventh annual Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival, a multi-generational meeting of legendary masters and emerging artists from September 1 – October 2 at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.
