John Ellis and Double-Wide

With saxophonist John Ellis, drummer Kendrick Scott, sousaphone player Ibanda Ruhumbika, organist Gary Versace, and trombonist Eric Miller

“The tenor saxophonist John Ellis is a commanding instrumentalist with a most gorgeous, caramelized tone. And though he now lives in New York, his band gives away the fact that he learned an awful lot in New Orleans.” – NPR

John Ellis is a premiere saxophonist, having performed and recorded on over 100 albums alongside artists including John Patitucci, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Robert Glasper, and Sting. Ellis is also a major force as a composer; he leads multiple bands and has received three composition grants through The Jazz Gallery, among other honors. Tonight, Ellis returns to Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to lead Double-Wide, a funky saxophone/sousaphone/organ/trombone/drum combo that bridges Ellis’ two homes, capturing the celebratory spirit of New Orleans and the urban grit of New York City. His website describes the mix as a balance of “bayou brass, raucous gospel, and devil-may-care modern jazz.” “I love the idea of being a conduit between these two cities that I love,” Ellis says. “The band is in pursuit of humorous fun, but there’s also more weighty, sinister stuff in there.” This duality gives the band a unique depth, but the “fun” component is undeniably what comes through front and center.
