Nasar Abadey & SUPERNOVA

Flip Side Sessions

With drummer Nasar Abadey, pianist Allyn Johnson, bassist James King, alto saxophonist Joe Ford, and trumpeter Josh Evans

Drummer Nasar Abadey is a versatile, yet distinctive musician who has performed with Pharoah Sanders, Dizzy Gillespie, Hank Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Sun Ra, and many more. His SUPERNOVA group, featuring stars of the D.C. jazz scene, was recently selected by the U.S. State Department and Jazz at Lincoln Center as an Ambassador for the American Music Abroad Rhythm Road program. From one piece to the next, the group writes and improvises through “traditional African rhythms, bebop, fusion, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, modal, and free form” styles. Beyond the group’s stylistic flexibility, what really stands out is their masterful pacing, through which they thoroughly explore ideas, grooves, and moods with an entrancing sense of direction and organic evolution.

This event is part of the sixth annual Coca-Cola Generations in Jazz Festival, a multi-generational meeting of legendary masters and emerging artists. Download the full schedule here.
