Director, Human Resources

 

Jazz at Lincoln Center (JALC) is one of the world’s leading performing arts organizations, with a mission “to entertain, enrich and expand a global community for jazz through performance, education and advocacy”.  A 501(c)3 organization that is now in its 31st year; JALC offers a full concert season with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (JLCO) with Wynton Marsalis (and many guests) at its home of Frederick P. Rose Hall.  “The House of Swing”, on the corner of Central Park at Columbus Circle in New York City; regularly tours the JLCO in the US and abroad. It operates a wide array of educational programs, from WeBop for kids through the year-long high school music program “Essentially Ellington”. Now in its second decade, it has begun a global suite of jazz advocacy initiatives ranging from free HD live webcasts and online teaching tools to local community-based advocacy programs.

Reporting to the CHRO, the Director, Human Resources will be an HR Business Partner and provide a full spectrum of HR solutions to Jazz at Lincoln Center staff and leadership with a focus on the production and performance staff as their first point of contact for all things Human Resources related.  In this role the Director, HR will provide counsel, leadership and help develop scalable solutions around performance management, learning and development, labor relations and talent acquisition needs.  The Director will also assist in the development of programs to continue high levels of engagement for the JALC staff.   In addition, the incumbent will oversee the Talent Acquisition function.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide HR Business Partner support to designated client group to include driving best practices to ensure consistency and effective resolutions of employee relations issues
  • Identify organization-wide training needs that cost effectively achieve employee development and strategic business goals attainment
  • Assist in the development of, and update of policies and procedures.
  • Champion, promote and drive a high performing culture
  • Maintain awareness and understanding of employment law, industry trends, current practices and new developments
  • Support the development and integration of new Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access programs
  • Deliver HR compliance training  
  • In conjunction with the CHRO, evaluate the compensation landscape to understand and learn best practices through benchmarking, industry research, and employment trends
  • Co-drive the implementation and administration of new benefit plans including annual open enrollment efforts
  • Manage the performance management process, including objective setting for the respective client group 
  • Manage the talent sourcing, selection and onboarding processes to ensure JALC attracts the best qualified candidates
  • Create and maintain a new employee orientation program to help newly hired employees quickly and effectively integrate to the JALC family and its culture 
  • Partner with CHRO, JALC leadership, DEI&A consultants, and staff to maintain a pulse on the organizational culture to identify and deploy effective strategies that would support it
  • Partner with hiring managers to ensure that recruiting and onboarding efforts support the retention of highly effective and diverse employee base
  • Collect and analyze information that will inform successful negotiations with the various CBAs on site
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required with a minimum of seven (7) years of progressive experience in HR.
  • Experience managing in union represented environments is highly preferred
  • Experience in managing HR functions, such as talent acquisition, total rewards, performance management, etc.
  • Excellent both verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate face paced environment
  • Proven ability to be self-directed and to operate independently
  • Very strong organizational skills
  • Strong relationship building skills
  • Commitment to the mission of Jazz at Lincoln Center.
  • Knowledge of or keen interest in and appreciation of jazz is helpful.
