Director, Foundation and Government Relations


The Director of Foundation and Government Relations directly contributes to achieving the annual goal and preparing for subsequent annual goals. He/she is the day-to-day operational lead for the institutional fundraising team comprised of two professional fundraising staff that solicit, write and manage foundation and government relationships.

An essential member of the senior Development team, the Director of Foundation and Government Relations oversees the strategic plan for foundations and government grants in collaboration with the Vice President, the Director of Principal Gifts and the Director of Partnership and Sales. This position will manage and grow a portfolio of high-level relationships and prospects. The successful candidate will be a leader in this field, take an entrepreneurial approach and show creativity around funding projects in order to grow this vital area.




  • Create and manage annual government and foundation fundraising plans in partnership with the Vice President of Development.

  • Oversee the writing, development and strategy of major foundation and government proposals.

  • Manage, facilitate and supervise contributed revenue activities of renewals, prospecting and compliance reporting of the grants team, comprised of two fundraising staff as well as intermittent contract grant writers.

  • Create and manage the foundation and government team expense budget and contributed revenue goals on a fiscal year basis.

  • Develop, manage, and evaluate a grants toolkit process that can be utilized by the development team.

  • Conduct annual performance reviews of the foundation and government team and coordinate annual work plans to meet revenue goals on an annual basis.

  • Prepare reports (both internal and external) as required by funders, at the request of Jazz at Lincoln Center leadership or in alignment with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Development reporting systems and revenue goal.



  • Lead foundation and government giving for national initiatives that aligns with Jazz at Lincoln Center’s goals and strategic plan.

  • Manage a robust national grant portfolio of foundation, corporate foundations and government funders that includes renewals of current donors and prospects.

  • Identification and research of foundation, corporation, and government funding prospects for national initiatives and Jazz at Lincoln Center programs.

  • Serve as an executive fundraising team member working closely with the Vice President of Development.

  • Identify and research foundation and government funding prospects for Jazz at Lincoln Center’s annual campaign and Campaign for Jazz.

  • Review requests for proposals created by the grant team and submit grant applications and proposals to city and private sources.

  • Review proposals created by Jazz at Lincoln Center staff or second party and affinity groups for compliance and delegate as necessary to the appropriate team members.

  • Monitor grant awards including grant agreements, reporting, and compliance requirements.

  • Conduct stewardship and cultivation activities to build, maintain, and strengthen relationships with government and foundation funders.

  • Oversee the grant team’s input of data in a timely and accurate manner in Tessitura.

  • Maintain necessary database records, files, reports, and resource materials pertinent to government and foundation activities with Tessitura.

  • Prepare reports for the Board Development Committee and manage prospect screening with the Board and other volunteers.

  • Create and maintain systems that promote good working relationships with program staff to ensure clear and timely communication for grant proposal development and/or reporting requirements.

  • Complete other relevant duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree required. A minimum of seven years of professional, competitive fundraising experience with a demonstrated ability to write successful seven-figure+ grant proposals and proposals that utilize logic models and evaluation plans.

  • Experience leading and managing professional staff. Must have strong team leadership skills.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to interface and negotiate with multiple institutional stakeholders.

  • Proven ability to work independently and manage complex and sensitive issues.

  • Keen attention to detail and strong analytic and problem-solving skills. Must be able to multitask and work within strict deadlines.

  • A positive attitude and a sense of humor are helpful.

  • Experience with Tessitura and/or other comprehensive development databases.

  • Commitment to the mission of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Knowledge of or keen interest in and appreciation of jazz helpful.
