With its iconic melodies, insightful harmonic progressions, and complex but danceable rhythms, the music of Thelonious Monk offers limitless opportunity for improvisation and interpretation. Monk's music is loved all over the world, and because of its fundamental simplicity, musicians of all styles and backgrounds find kinship in it. This global exploration of Monk features the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, Baqir Abbas, Hamilton de Holanda, and brand new Monk arrangements.

'Round Midnight: Monk's Legacy

Thelonious Monk is a singular genius in the world of jazz. One such composition is the masterpiece "'Round Midnight," written when Monk was only 18 years old. Tonight, his music will be performed by two of the most exciting young pianists of the next generation of jazz: 13-year-old Indonesian sensation Joey Alexander, the first true child prodigy in the history of jazz; and New Orleans' Sullivan Fortner, recipient of the 2015 American Pianists Association's prestigious Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz honor.

Week Six: Cool Jazz, Hard Bop, Modal Jazz, Free Jazz

As the 1940s gave way to the 1950s, Jazz developed many new offshoot styles. Cool Jazz arrived, seeking a marriage of BeBop and Swing Era music. Hard Bop sought to infuse bop with Blues and Gospel roots. Modal Jazz wanted to rebuild the music’s harmonic system completely, while Free Jazz sought to uproot many (and sometimes all!) of our preconceptions of what this music should sound like!

In Michael Feinstein's final Jazz & Popular Song concert of the season, the multi-platinum selling interpreter of American song will perform classics made famous by Ella Fitzgerald. The "First Lady of Song" was a particularly well-rounded musician, an impeccable singer and endlessly influential improviser. Feinstein will be joined by vocalists Nicole HenryJessie Mueller, and Vuyo Sotashe as well as the Tedd Firth Big Band.

Studio Senakwami Presents: The Gustavo Casenave Quartet Featuring John Patitucci

Gustavo Casenave is a three time Latin Grammy® Award nominee, a Steinway Artist and a 2015 ACE Awardee.  Mr. Casenave is a Uruguayan pianist and composer who has collaborated and recorded with artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Bette Midler, Eddie Gomez, Robert Duvall, Neil Sedaca among many others.

The Quartet features the acclaimed, Grammy® nominated jazz bassist John Patitucci.  Mr. Patitucci was a member of three Chick Corea groups: the Electrik Band, the Akoustic Band and the Quartet.  He has been honored to play with such  musicians as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Roy Haynes.

New York City Opera: Angels in America

New York City Opera closes its season with the New York Premiere of Péter Eötvös’s Angels in America based on the play by Tony Kushner. This operatic adaptation of the groundbreaking, Pulitzer Prize-winning play distills the two-night, seven-hour drama into a single, powerful evening. Sung in English, with supertitles.

​From its very beginnings, Jazz was always a fusion of musical styles. However, as the century progressed, Jazz began to work even more closely with other genres, giving birth to many new and exciting styles. Latin Jazz emerged, fusing Jazz vocabulary with Afro-Cuban musical traditions.
