Dee Dee Bridgewater: Songs We Love

Featuring Ulysses Owens, Jr., Theo Bleckmann, and Alicia Olatuja

Superstar vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater takes you through 100 years of jazz song. On Friday (9/23), she will sing the early blues and jazz of the 1920s through the 1950s, joined by music director/trumpeter Riley Mulherkar and vocalists Vuyo Sotashe and Brianna Thomas. On Saturday (9/24), she will start with the socially conscious music of the 1950s and end with the songs of today, featuring music director/drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr. and vocalists Theo Bleckmann and Alicia Olatuja.

Our season-opening concert features the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and some of today's top pianists, including Dan Nimmer, Joey Alexander, Dick Hyman, Helen Sung, Larry Willis, Myra Melford​ and Isaiah J. Thompson. Performing definitive compositions by piano geniuses like Jelly Roll Morton, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck, and Marcus Roberts, tonight's special guests will showcase an astonishing evolution of jazz piano that now spans over 100 years.

The Big Band Living Legacy Project celebrates and carries on the musical heritage of big band jazz, performed by original members of such classic big bands as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, and Benny Goodman. The repertoire includes hits and lesser known works by composers including Sy Olliver, Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Neil Hefti, Ernie Wilkins, Thad Jones, and Bob Brookmeyer.

Week One: The Building Blocks of Jazz

Swing University’s Jazz 101 opens with a short overview of the development of Jazz, and its progression. We’ll also go into the building blocks of Jazz: what is Swing, what are the Blues, and what is Improvisation? In this class, we’ll help you to hear song form, and also help you hear how Jazz musicians approach their solos!

Brad Mehldau

Visionary pianist Brad Mehldau, called "a graceful powerhouse" by The New York Times, makes his long-awaited return to Rose Theater for two distinct concerts. On Friday (9/30) Mehldau will perform alongside saxophonist Joshua Redman, showcasing one of the most celebrated pairings in contemporary jazz. On Saturday (10/1), Mehldau will treat audiences to a solo concert, a challenging format for which he is highly renowned.
