Essentially Ellington Competition, Part I

Jazz at Lincoln Center’s annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition & Festival is one of the most innovative jazz education events in the world. Each year, high school musicians from across North America travel to New York City to spend three days immersed in workshops, jam sessions, rehearsals and performances. The Competition & Festival is the culmination of the yearlong Essentially Ellington program, during which participating bands are invited to submit a recording and 15 finalists are selected through a rigorous screening process.

Jazz and Broadway

Jazz at Lincoln Center’s 2016 Gala – Jazz and Broadway – celebrates the timeless music of the Great White Way and the profound influence that jazz has had on Broadway throughout history. This one-night-only celebration, hosted by the iconic stage and screen actress Vanessa Williams and anchored by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, will pay homage to top Broadway composers like Scott Joplin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter, and Stephen Sondheim.

Michael Feinstein: A Right to Sing the Blues

Jazz & Popular Song series director Michael Feinstein demonstrates how the blues became part of the popular musical lexicon through songs like “Come Rain or Come Shine,” “Great Balls of Fire,” and “Show Me the Way to get Out of this World.” Joining Feinstein will be the Tedd Firth Big Band and three exciting singers: Mary Stallings, a renowned vocalist who’s worked with top jazz musicians since the 1950s; Storm Large, a versatile artist well known as a member of the genre-crossing “little orchestra” Pink Martini; and Jamie Davis, a world-traveling baritone powerhouse.

Miles Davis: The Sorcerer at 90

The first half of our Miles & ‘Trane Festival is led by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, as the band debuts new arrangements and revisits favorites from Miles Davis’ legendary body of work. The diverse, label-defying Davis, who would have turned ninety this year, remains the pinnacle of transformative expression, musically and beyond.
