The Life and Legacy of Benny Goodman

SESSION 5: SING, SING, SING

Can’t commit to a full course? Single classes are now available at Swing University for $35 each (fees may apply).

Goodman was in the right time and the right place to bring white America into the world of swing in the mid-1930’s. The music that Louis Armstrong, Fletcher Henderson and Duke Ellington had been there all along, but it took a Goodman to initiate what became known as The Swing Era. He did by championing Henderson’s concept and then adding Teddy Wilson, Lionel Hampton and Charlie Christian to his entourage. Hit recordings followed, and Goodman’s career peaked at his epochal 1938 Carnegie Hall concert.
