Week 1 - Early Basie Stride/Boogie/Swing

In week one, we look at the music that inspired the young Count Basie, and explore some of his earlier recordings and bands.

Mary Stallings and the Mike LeDonne Trio

With special guest Steve Nelson

Mary Stallings is one of jazz’s most accomplished vocalists. Over the course of a nearly 60-year career, she has worked with the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Count Basie, Harry “Sweets” Edison, Geri Allen, and more. Stallings will perform with the Mike LeDonne Trio, comprised of rising star drummer Jason Brown, jazz veteran guitarist Ed Cherry, and prolific organist Mike LeDonne.

Henry Threadgill: Pulitzer Nights

Due to illness, Henry Threadgill’s performances at Jazz at Lincoln Center on September 22nd and 23rd have been postponed. No further information about rescheduling is available at this time.

Visionary composer and multi-reedist Henry Threadgill is a living legend whom the New York Times calls a “composer and bandleader of intense, unyielding originality.” In this centennial year of the Pulitzer Prize, he graces Jazz at Lincoln Center in honor of the three African American jazz musicians who have won this prestigious award: Wynton Marsalis, Ornette Coleman, and — as of 2016  Henry Threadgill! On Friday (9/22), Threadgill will lead his acclaimed Double Up Plus ensemble, featuring saxophone, cello, tuba, drums, and three extraordinary pianists: David Bryant, David Virelles, and special guest Luis Perdomo. On Saturday (9/23), Threadgill will premiere a new original work and a brand new 15-piece ensemble featuring the aforementioned pianists.
