Week 4 - Collaborations and All-Stars

In our final week, we’ll look at the late period of Count Basie’s career, including his records with MGM-Verve and with Impulse! records. We’ll also look at his collaborations with singers like Tony Bennett, Sarah Vaughan, and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as his jam sessions for Pablo Records with figures like Count Basie and Louie Bellson.

Trumpeter Josh Evans has performed and recorded with an extraordinary list of artists, including Jackie McLean, Christian McBride, Cedar Walton, Rashied Ali, and Gregory Porter. Tonight at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, Evans returns with his Big Band to perform his arrangements of standards and originals.

Roots & Rhythms of Latin Jazz, with Bobby Sanabria

Week 3: The Breakthrough – Mario Bauzá and The Machito Afro-Cubans

Cuban born trumpeter, clarinetist, alto saxophonist, Mario Bauzá had been a child prodigy becoming a member of the Havana Philharmonic as a teenager and a featured clarinetist with pianist Antonio Maria Romeu’s Charanga Orchestra. His arrival to NYC in 1926 at the age of 15 with Romeu changed his life as he was inspired by two things – Harlem, and the Paul Whitman Orchestra performing Gershwin’s Rhapsody In Blue.

The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis has put forth a vast, innovative body of original work, including compositions by band members Victor Goines, Ted Nash, Chris Crenshaw, Marcus Printup, Carlos Henriquez, Vincent Gardner, and Wynton Marsalis. For the first time in Rose Theater, they will treat audiences to a collection of their best compositions.
