Listening Party:
New Orleans-Style Clarinet - How a tradition was born and how it shaped early jazz

Historians have well-considered how the musical cultural life of New Orleans formed the ideal environment for the evolution of jazz. But, few musicians have attempted to elaborate on how the city's soundscape created the jazz aesthetic. Join New Orleans-based clarinetist, Evan Christopher, for a demonstration of how the broad range of activities and opportunities for musicians black, white, and Creole influenced the way clarinetists approached their instrument and how the distinct sound of the clarinet and stylistic elements in traditional New Orleans music evolved. This two day "Listening Party" combines guided listening with an open masterclass format. So, musicians and non-musicians alike are invited and clarinetists are encouraged to bring their instruments.

Please Note:  There are no reservations, and seating is on a first come, first served basis.
