The Music of Dexter Gordon: A Celebration

Dexter Gordon Legacy Ensemble

With special guest drummer Louis Hayes (Feb 23 & 24); tenor saxophonist Abraham Burton; trumpeter Josh Evans; pianist Alan Palmer (Feb 23 & 24); pianist David Bryant (Feb 25 & 26); vibraphonist Steve Nelson (February 26); bassist Gerald Cannon, (Feb 23-25); bassist Peter Washington, (Feb 26); and drummer Eric McPherson (Feb 25 & 26)

Celebrating Dexter Gordon on what would be his 94th birthday, an all-star lineup will play the music from his classic Homecoming and Sophisticated Giant albums (Columbia Records) as well as some of the iconic ballads that made him so unique. Dexter Gordon (1923–1990) is considered the first saxophonist to translate the language of bebop to the tenor saxophone. He was nominated for an Oscar for his leading actor performance in the film Round Midnight in 1986. Legendary drummer Louis Hayes will lead the band on February 23 and 24. Hayes was one of the members of the Homecoming band that welcomed Gordon back to the United States in 1976 after he spent 14 years in Europe. He’ll be joined by a powerhouse band featuring Abraham Burton, Josh Evans, Alan Palmer, and Gerald Cannon. On February 25 and 26, David Bryant takes over on piano and Eric McPherson will be on drums. The 9:30pm set on February 26 will be a jam session with special surprise guests and Peter Washington on bass.
