This listening series of talks will examine the early years of jazz, its causes, and its development, from 1900-1950. Led by scholar and artist Allen Lowe, we will start with a pre-history of jazz, the roots of minstrelsy, common sources of country music and pop music,  and the transition from ragtime; through early jazz, pre-swing, and the birth of Swing. And finally, into the bebop era, the flourishing of 'modern jazz,' and the roots of Things to Come.
